Description
Rytha Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was rebuilt and altered around 1740, with a refronting in the mid-19th century and few later changes. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble, with the front slate-hung. It features a slate roof that is hipped over the rear range, while the gable ends and gable end stacks are found on the front range. The rear slope is covered in asbestos slate.
The layout includes a rear range that appears to have a three-room plan, with a rear lateral stack on the right and two rooms on the left heated from an axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces. The front range has a two-room plan, with a central entrance and a stairwell at the rear center, which is part of the 18th-century remodelling. The rear left of the building seems to have been partly rebuilt during this time.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-window arrangement. All windows are 19th-century 16-pane sashes, except for a 20-pane sash on the ground floor to the right. There is a central gabled rendered porch with an inner panelled and glazed door. The right side of the front range has a small 16-pane sash window at ground floor level to the left. There is a straight joint to the rear range, which has a 20th-century three-light casement window at ground floor and a two-light 19th-century casement window at first floor with L hinges. Three pigeon holes are located at first floor level to the right. The left side of the front range is slate-hung.
The rear range projects beyond the front range and has a door at the front, along with a 20th-century window at first floor. A small lean-to is located at the side. The rear of the main house features a rear lateral stack on the left and a small single-storey 19th-century rubble addition with a door to the side and a three-light casement window to the rear with L hinges. The rear also has two 20th-century two-light casement windows at first floor level with a straight joint between them, and a plain door to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
