Description

A house, dating from the early 18th century, likely incorporating fabric from an earlier building. It is constructed of coursed killas stone, with granite quoins and dressings, and has slate roofs. The main block has a square plan with axial hallways facing both the front and garden, leading to a central staircase in the rear bay. A service wing, possibly containing earlier work, is attached to the north, and an enclosed yard with a well house is located on the east.

The main, west-facing front was remodelled in the later 19th century, and has five window bays. A central, heavy Tuscan doorcase with a slight pediment provides access, flanked by square, late 19th-century bay windows, each with two elongated four-pane sashes and crenellated parapets. The upper floor has matching windows, all with flush granite lintels. The south-facing garden front also has five bays. A central four-panelled door with an overlight gives access, with eighteen-paned sashes, featuring heavy glazing bars set in flush granite surrounds and raised keys to the lintels. The roof is hipped. A cast iron pergola, without a roof, is also present. At the rear, there is a central round-headed stair window with intersecting glazing bars.

The interior retains some 18th-century panelling. The site originally belonged to a monastic order, and an earlier building on the site served as the seat of Jago, sheriff of Cornwall, in the mid-17th century, and subsequently of the Trencreeke and Polwhele families. Courts were held here in 1684. Horseshoe bats are known to reside on the property as of 1987.
