Description
The steps, wall, and railings located north-west of the Church of King Charles the Martyr were likely built in the mid to late 19th century. They are constructed from dressed freestone and dressed granite. The retaining wall serves the church forecourt and runs parallel to the church, featuring five straight bays followed by a concave quadrant bay to the left of the church steps. On the right, there is a plinth topped with wrought-iron railings and a central gate that leads back to the north-west corner of the church, where a further flight of steps connects to a path beside the churchyard at the far right.
The wall includes a granite plinth and granite ashlar pilasters. The two bays on the left are topped with a plain parapet that has both an upper and lower moulded cornice. The lower cornice extends beneath a Gothic-style balustrade adorned with trefoils, while the pilasters rise to cruciform caps. The panels between the pilasters are made of finely-coursed freestone ashlar. Each flight of steps consists of nine wide granite steps. Flanking the church steps are slender granite monolith gate piers, which also feature cruciform caps.
