Description
West Ruthern Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins in the 17th century, which was enlarged and altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, with some later modifications. It is constructed from slatestone and granite rubble and features a two-span rag slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. The gable end stacks have rubble shafts.
The farmhouse has a two-room plan, with each room heated by a gable end stack. An unheated dairy was likely added to the rear left in the 18th century, and in the 19th century, a one-room plan addition was made to the right end, along with another one-room plan addition to the rear right, creating a two-span roof.
The exterior of the first range is two-storey with a symmetrical three-window front. All windows are two-light eight-pane casements with L hinges. Off-centre to the left are 20th-century glazed double doors. There is a straight joint to the right leading to the addition, which is also two-storey and features 19th-century 16-pane sashes at both the ground and first floors. The left side has a blind gable end. The dairy on the left is single-storey with an apple loft above, featuring a small two-pane window at ground level and a two-light three-pane casement in the loft. The right side has a four-panelled door to the left, while the rear range includes 19th-century four-pane sashes at both levels and a chimney off-centre to the right. There is a single-storey lean-to on the right with a loft above, featuring a two-light casement at the upper level. At the rear, the former dairy has a two-light casement at ground level and two two-light casements under the eaves, along with a 20th-century casement that was formerly a door to the right. To the left, the addition has a two-light casement at the rear and a stable door on the inner side, with a two-light casement above.
Inside, the two rooms of the original building have been combined into one, with a fireplace at each gable end. The location of the original staircase is unclear.
