Description
Bosneives Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse with alterations and additions from the later 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble, with an asbestos slate roof covered in ridge tiles and gable ends, featuring deep bracketed eaves. Gable end stacks are present with rubble shafts.
The farmhouse follows a double-depth plan, with principal rooms located to the front left and right, each heated by a gable end stack. A small room is situated to the rear right, and there was a former dairy to the rear left. A one-room plan kitchen wing extends to the rear right, also heated by a gable end stack. The main stair is positioned at the rear of the central entrance passage, with a separate service stair to the rear left.
The front of the farmhouse presents a symmetrical three-window facade. The windows are largely 20-pane sashes from the early 19th century, with a central 16-pane sash on the first floor. A central 18th-century panelled door features two glazed panels and a flat hood supported by wooden posts, likely added in the early 19th century. The right side of the building has an external stack and, at attic level, a 6-pane light to the left and a 2-light casement to the right. A 12-pane sash is present at both ground and first floor levels to the right. The rear wing incorporates 20th-century French windows and an early 19th-century 20-pane sash at first floor. A section of the rear wing has been brought forward to the right, incorporating a 20th-century window at ground floor. The left side features a buttress and a 20th-century attic light. The rear of the main house has a 20th-century door and window to the right, alongside a 19th-century 16-pane sash at first floor. The rear wing has two 20th-century ground floor windows; one was formerly a door, and a small 6-pane casement is located to the right. The first floor of the rear wing contains a 6-pane sash to the left and an 18-pane sash to the right, illuminating the service stair.
Inside, the central entrance hall has a 6-panelled door on both the right and left sides. The front left room showcases a plaster cornice and an early 19th-century slate chimneypiece. The dog-leg stair, dating back to the early 18th century, features turned balusters and a wide moulded handrail, rising to the attic level. The balusters on the attic landing retain early 18th-century painted wood graining. A cupboard under the ground floor stair has an early 18th-century 2-panelled door with HL hinges. The rear service stair has stick balusters. The kitchen in the rear wing was formerly partitioned and has a slate-paved floor and an end fireplace with a replaced granite lintel and a cloam oven to the rear right. The former dairy to the rear left retains a granite salting trough. All rooms on the first floor retain early 18th-century 2-panelled fielded doors with wooden catches.
