Description
Ruthern Bridge is a bridge over the River Ruthern, dating from around 1450. It is constructed of granite and slatestone rubble and features two four-centred arches with recessed slatestone arch rings. On the upstream side, there is a central triangular cutwater with a refuge made of granite ashlar, along with smaller triangular cutwaters with refuges in ashlar on the outer side of each arch. The downstream side has rounded arches with similar recessed slatestone arch rings and matching central and outer cutwaters in ashlar. The parapet walls are approximately half a metre high, made of granite rubble with chamfered granite coping. There are three refuges on the upstream side, and the parapet wall extends about 12 metres to the east, gradually decreasing in height. The bridge measures about 20 metres long and about 4 metres wide. Ruthern Bridge is located on an ancient road from Bodmin over Hustyn Down to Padstow and was referred to as Rothyn Brygge in 1494.
