Description

Doyden Castle is a folly built around 1830 for Captain Conor. It is constructed from fine quality ashlar stone, with some granite dressings that are likely reused. The building has a square plan and consists of one room, integrated into the side of a rocky headland. It features a basement entrance on the northeast and a ground floor entrance on the southwest. The structure has two storeys and a basement.

All window openings are fitted with diagonal leaded lights. The basement entrance on the northeast has a 20th-century plank door. The ground floor includes a 2-light mullioned window with a hollow chamfer and hood moulds on the northeast, along with a two-centred arched entrance on the southwest. The ground floor elevations on the northwest and southeast are slightly set forward and feature 2-light windows with a battlemented parapet above. The first floor is illuminated by four 2-light windows in two-centred arched openings, also with hollow chamfers and hood moulds. The battlemented parapet is adorned with four crocketed finials at the corners. The interior has not been inspected. Doyden Castle is reputed to have been built as a folly and wine store and is noted for its picturesque appearance on the unspoilt rocky headland above Port Quin.
