Description
This is a pair of gate piers and adjoining stiles located immediately northeast of Bosvathick Lodge, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. The scrolled brackets on either side and the lions may be from the earlier 17th century, while the stiles are likely from the late 19th century. Constructed from granite, the gate piers are made of granite ashlar and feature plinths, a torus neck moulding, and cyma moulded cornice caps topped with round ogee finials that support balls. There are short sections of wall on either side that support large granite scroll brackets, which may be reused coping terminals. At each end, there is a low pedestal supporting a large granite heraldic lion couchant with a flat face, each about one meter long from head to tail, which are also likely reused. Between the lion pedestals and pier brackets, there are granite stiles on both sides of the gateway. The main carriageway is fitted with a late 19th-century diagonally braced wooden gate. The gate piers may date to the same period as the main south front of Bosvathick House, although there is a possibility that they originated from Trewardeva House, as noted by Henderson, who mentions that they are said to have come from there, with other gate piers at Trewardeva House likely dating to the 1719 remodelling.
