Description

The coach house with an attached screen wall is located to the north of Nanswhyden Farmhouse and dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. The coach house is constructed from slatestone and granite rubble, featuring granite dressings, and has a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends.

The building has a large rectangular plan with three carriage entrances at the front and a loft above. The screen wall is attached at a right angle to the front right, creating a separation between the yard in front of the coach house and the site of the former farmhouse, which no longer exists.

On the exterior, the coach house showcases three elliptically-arched carriage entrances, with two central granite ashlar piers between them, each arch adorned with keystones. Above the arches are three dressed granite lunettes. To the left, there is a C20 enlarged entrance, while to the right, there is a plank door with a granite lintel and keystone, along with a 2-light window with a granite lintel at the end. A loading door is situated above, and the left end of the building is blind.

The attached wall is approximately 8 meters long and 4 meters high, topped with granite coping. At the coach house end, there is a double gateway flanked by tall square brick piers with flat granite caps on granite plinths, and a narrower segmental archway to the right. A C20 lean-to is attached to the wall. The interior has not been inspected.
