Description
The Parkandillick Engine House is a 19th-century engine house that includes an attached boiler house and a detached chimney, located at the Parkandillick China Clay Works in St Dennis. The building is constructed from granite rubble with brick dressings and features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends.
The engine house has a rectangular plan, with the front gable end facing southeast and a bob wall at the rear gable end. The boiler house is attached to the northeast side and projects slightly forward, while the chimney stands about 10 meters away to the southeast. The engine house contains a 50-inch bore pumping engine and retains all of its machinery.
Architecturally, the engine house is three stories tall with a symmetrical front gable end. The ground floor features a wide round-arched doorway with a brick arch, a half-glazed door, sidelights, and an overlight. The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows with round brick arches. The boiler house is a single story with a 6-pane window at the rear and a blind gable end. The detached chimney is circular, tapered, built of rubble, and has a brick cornice.
On the right side of the boiler house, there is a 9-pane window and a plank door, along with a 6-pane light at the rear. The right side of the engine house has a round-arched 12-pane sash window at the first floor level. The left side is blind and has a small single-story shed attached, featuring a door and a blocked window opening at the front. At the rear, there is a half-glazed door with a fanlight and a round brick arch at ground floor level. The upper bob opening is weatherboarded, with platforms on either side of the beam. Inside, the engine house retains its complete machinery, including a 50-inch beam engine, and features a straight stair on the right-hand side leading from the ground floor to the first floor, with a scrolled string.
