Description

SW95NE ST DENNIS ENNISCAVEN

Cottage at SW 9646 13/10009 5925

II

House. Late C17/early C18. Cob and slatestone rubble, the front being clad in slates; corrugated iron over thatch roof with end stacks, that to left of front being a large offset stack and that to right a later insertion. 2-unit plan with heated hall/kitchen to left of unheated room; later, probably C19, rear lean-tos. Single storey with attic; 3-window garden front (facing away from road) has central doorway and mid C19 and later 12-pane and 4-pane sashes. Interior not available for inspection but said to have old beams and roof structure. A very rare survival of a Cornish house in the cob and thatch vernacular tradition, once ubiquitous in the county but now very rare due to rebuilding in stone and slate from the late 18th century.
