Description
This building is a cottage dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, located in St Dennis, Cornwall. It is constructed of cob and slatestone rubble, with the front clad in slates. The roof is covered with corrugated iron over thatch and features end stacks; the left stack is a large offset stack, while the right is a later addition. The cottage has a two-unit plan, with a heated hall/kitchen on the left and an unheated room on the right. There are later rear lean-tos, likely from the 19th century. The cottage is a single storey with an attic and has a garden front that faces away from the road, featuring three windows, a central doorway, and mid-19th century 12-pane and 4-pane sash windows. Although the interior was not available for inspection, it is reported to have old beams and a roof structure. This cottage is a very rare example of a Cornish house in the cob and thatch vernacular tradition, which was once common in the county but has become scarce due to rebuilding in stone and slate from the late 18th century.
