Description

1 Chaplands Cottages is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with some minor additions from the late 18th century. It is constructed of rendered cob and features a hipped thatched roof, along with rendered additions that have corrugated-iron lean-to roofs. There is a squared and coursed stone end stack on the left, topped with a 19th-century brick stage.

The cottage has a two-room plan, positioned at right angles to the road and facing southeast. The larger room, or hall, is located to the left and has an external end stack, while a smaller unheated room is to the right. The entrance is roughly central, located at the right-hand end of the hall, and features a projecting porch at the front. There is likely a later 18th or 19th-century one-storey lean-to outshut on the left end and a continuous outshut at the rear. The building is two storeys tall, with one-storey outshuts.

The exterior has a symmetrical two-window front. To the left, there are 19th-century small-paned two-light wooden casements, while the first floor has a late 20th-century one-light wooden casement to the right, and the ground floor also has a late 20th-century one-light window. The porch, which is roughly central, has a raking roof under projecting eaves and a wide doorway with a 20th-century half-glazed door. The left-hand end stack features chamfered offsets on the sides and a string course with chamfered offsets leading to the brick top stage above. The left-hand lean-to addition has a boarded door at the front, and there is a ground floor four-pane window at the right-hand end of the house. The interior has not been inspected.
