Description

The Trethosa School, located in St Stephen-in-Brannel, was built in the late 19th century and has undergone few subsequent alterations. It is constructed of squared granite rubble with granite dressings and has slate roofs with ridge tiles and gable ends featuring raised coped verges. The building has an asymmetrical layout: the main school hall faces forward, with a wing to the left containing the boys’ entrance and a wing to the right containing the girls’ entrance. The right wing extends to the rear, incorporating classrooms, and there are further classrooms behind the main hall.

The front of the main hall has a five-light window, comprising a central four-pane sash with a round-arched toplight and flanking two plate-glass sashes with toplights. An inscription in raised upper-case lettering reads "TRETHOSA SCHOOL ST STEPHENS SCHOOL BOARD." The left side of the hall displays a three-light window with four-pane sashes and toplights, and the right side has a similar window. The wing to the left has a 20th-century door with an overlight, and a block inscription above the doorway reading "BOYS." A two-light window is positioned on the left side of this wing. The wing to the right also has a 20th-century door with sidelights (the inscription above is missing). The right end of this wing has a half-hipped roof and a three-light window, all with four-pane sashes and toplights. At the rear of the building, the gable end of the rear range features four four-pane sashes with toplights, the two central lights being taller. One classroom is located at the rear left, featuring a blind end wall and two six-pane windows on the inner side of the wing. To the right are two gable ends, each with a three-light window with the central light taller and incorporating eight panes with six-pane lights on each side, plus a two-light window at the end right. The interior of the school has not been inspected. The original bellcote has a shaped gable and a ball finial.
