Description

Graylands is a mid-19th century suburban villa, likely designed by Henry Rice. The building features stucco on masonry with a plinth and string course on the entrance and garden fronts, while the rest is constructed of rubble. It has a dry slate roof with projecting eaves above a frieze supported by console brackets. The villa has a double-depth plan with service wings and stands two storeys high. The symmetrical south garden front has four windows, with segmental arches over 8-pane hornless sash windows on the first floor and two canted bays with 4-pane hornless sashes on the ground floor, all set within moulded architraves and topped with moulded parapet cornices. The east entrance front has three windows, featuring a recessed bay with a blind window on the left. The first-floor windows are similar to those on the garden front. The central doorway is framed by a distyle Doric porch and a four-panel door, flanked by glazed sidelights over panels with guttae to the cornices, and a 4-pane hornless sash window on the right with a hood supported by consoles. The interior is of good quality, showcasing original features such as an open-well open-string staircase with a mahogany handrail that scrolls over the newel post, a plaster hall ceiling with a modillion cornice and moulded ribs, and a straight-flight back stair with stick balusters.
