Retallack Farmhouse and Adjoining Outbuildings

Retallack Farmhouse and its adjoining outbuildings are a late 18th-century farmhouse with additional structures. The house was extended in the late 18th century and early 19th century on the left and rear, with a significant deep rear range added in 1907, as indicated by a datestone. The building is constructed of rubble with granite dressings, partially slurried, and has stucco over cob on the first floor of the house front. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate, primarily featuring gable ends. There is a stone stack over the left gable of the house, and brick chimneys over the right gable and the rear wing.

The original layout of the farmhouse likely consisted of two rooms with a cross passage between them. In the late 18th century, a two-room structure was added on the left, which was later converted into a farm building, along with a single-storey cart shed added at the far left. In the early to mid-19th century, a one-room kitchen wing was added at right angles behind the left room, with an outshut added behind the right room of the farm buildings, which runs parallel to and on the left side of the kitchen wing but is much deeper, with the rear part cranked slightly to the right.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and features a slightly asymmetrical two-window west front with a central doorway. The symmetrical two-window front of the former house, now a shippon, steps down on the left, while the single-storey cart shed with a hipped end is at the far left. The original house has a three-panel door with arched top panels and 12-pane horned sashes. The shippon has a blocked doorway and old shuttered windows, with the ground floor windows partially ventilated with louvres. Inside the house, there are 18th-century beams in the left-hand room, while the rest of the interior features 19th-century carpentry and joinery, remaining largely unaltered since. The roof structure has not been inspected.
