Description
ST NEOT SX 16 NE 9/161 Group of farm buildings including - barn and granary about 50 metres south of Wenmouth Farmhouse GV II Group of farm buildings, including a stable, a threshing barn and a granary. Probably late C18 - early C19, with additions and alterations of later C19 and few later alterations. Slatestone rubble. Slate roofs; the stable has a hipped roof with ridge tiles, the barn has gable end to left and half-hipped roof to right; the granary has a hipped roof. Plan: The buildings are arranged around a farmyard with midden. The north range is the stable, with loft over. The south range is a threshing barn, of 2 storeys, with a gabled wing at the rear; this was extended to the right in the later C19, and there is a pigeon loft. About one metre east of the barn is the granary, with access at first floor corresponding to a first floor door in the left end of the barn. The group form a modest planned farmyard. Exterior of stable: The stable is a nearly symmetrical 2-storey range. At first floor there are 3 loading doors in hipped dormers; to each side of the central door, there are 2 ventilation slits, and the outer ends have a ventilation slit to left and a small single light to right. At ground floor, there are 9 openings, 4 doors and a double door which is off-centre to right; the windows are 4-pane lights or shuttered, all with flat stone arches. Left side blind. Threshing barn: Tall 2-storey barn, in 2 builds, with a straight joint between; the later C19 addition to the right. Asymmetrical barn, with 3 door openings at ground floor, all with flat stone lintels with keystones; one door blocked with 2-pane light inserted. At first floor there is a loading door set off-centre to left, with a pitched slate hood; smaller loading door to right. Ventilation slit to right and left. 2 rows of square pigeon holes under the eaves. Granite quoins. The addition to right is at the same roof level, with a 4-pane light and door at ground floor, narrow opening and single light at first floor; half-hipped roof. Single storey late C19 addition to right, wtih door and single light with segmental brick heads, single light at the right side. The left end of the barn has a loading door at first floor. At the rear there is a tall gabled wing behind the first building; ventilation slits to left. Granary: 2 storey square plan building. The front has a door at ground floor to right, and the left side has an external granite stair leading to a door at loft level. At the right side there is a loading door at first floor, which is directly opposite the loading door on the left side of the threshing barn. Interiors: Not inspected.
