Group Of Farm Buildings Including Barn And Granary About 50 Metres South Of Wenmouth Farmhouse

A group of farm buildings, including a stable, threshing barn, and granary, dating probably to the late 18th or early 19th century, with later 19th-century additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of slatestone rubble with slate roofs. The stable has a hipped roof with ridge tiles, the barn has a gable end to the left and a half-hipped roof to the right, while the granary has a hipped roof.

The buildings are arranged around a farmyard, incorporating a midden. The north range is the stable, with a loft above. The south range is the threshing barn, a two-storey structure with a gabled wing at the rear, which was extended in the later 19th century and includes a pigeon loft. Adjacent to the barn, approximately one metre to the east, is the granary, with first-floor access corresponding to a first-floor door in the left end of the barn. These buildings form a modest, planned farmyard.

The stable is a nearly symmetrical two-storey range, featuring three loading doors within hipped dormers on the first floor. Ventilation slits are located to either side of the central dormer, and to the outer ends of the stable are a ventilation slit to the left and a single light to the right. The ground floor has nine openings, including four doors and a double door slightly off-centre to the right, with windows consisting of four-pane lights or shutters, all beneath flat stone arches. The left side of the stable is blank.

The threshing barn is a tall, two-storey building, constructed in two phases with a visible straight joint between them. The later 19th-century addition extends to the right. The barn has three ground-floor door openings, all with flat stone lintels and keystones, one of which is blocked and replaced with a two-pane light. A loading door is set off-centre to the left on the first floor, hooded with a pitched slate roof, with a smaller loading door to the right. There are ventilation slits to the left and right, and two rows of square pigeon holes under the eaves. Granite quoins are present. The addition to the right is at the same roof level, with a four-pane light and a door at ground floor, a narrow opening and a single light at first floor, and a half-hipped roof. A single-storey later 19th-century addition is located to the right, with a door and single light, both with segmental brick heads, and a further single light to the right side. The left end of the barn features a loading door at first floor level. At the rear, a tall gabled wing rises behind the main building, incorporating ventilation slits to the left.

The granary is a two-storey square plan building. It has a ground-floor door to the right of its front face, and an external granite staircase leading to a door at loft level on the left side. A loading door is located on the right side at first floor level, directly opposite the loading door on the left side of the threshing barn. The interior was not inspected.
