Description

A late 18th-century redoubt and associated boundary walls, now converted into two houses. The west block was altered in the mid 19th century, and further changes took place in the 20th century to both blocks. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with sandstone dressings and quoins; the west block has a two-span hipped slate roof, and is partially rendered.

The redoubt has a roughly square plan with barrack blocks to the east and west. The west block was given an additional storey in the mid 19th century, providing external access and currently forming two houses. The east block remains single-storey.

The west block’s front elevation is rendered, featuring three casements for guns at ground floor level, and three casements at first floor level, all with cambered heads and 20th-century windows. A single-storey lean-to is located to the left. The rear ground floor and left side exhibit paired casements, two-light in character, with horizontal gun ports positioned between the casements, each featuring cambered stone heads with keystones. Two two-light casements are present at first floor level with cambered brick heads. The right side is rendered, with a two-storey brick addition to the left, housing a two-light casement at ground and first floor levels; the ground floor window has a stone head, while the first floor window has a brick head. A brick porch addition serves as the former main entrance, sheltering a four-panelled door.

The east block is single-storey, partly rendered, and moated. The front is splayed at the corners, with a parapet stepped down to the left to accommodate a gun emplacement and a single-storey 20th-century porch. The front displays 20th-century windows to the right and left, and a central pitched-roof porch. The right side has a single-storey lean-to at a lower ground floor level. The upper ground floor level features casements with horizontal openings, with sandstone splayed heads and keystones. The left side has two two-light casements and a central horizontal opening. The rear includes two two-light casements and horizontal openings, all with splayed stone heads, and a 20th-century doorway to the left. The parapet wall has chamfered coping.

The interior has not been inspected. The boundary walls are of roughly square plan, constructed of battered slatestone rubble with limestone quoins.

The redoubt forms part of the Mount Edgcumbe estate and is of group value.
