Description
Barton Farmhouse is a house that was previously divided into three cottages and has now been converted into a single dwelling. It dates from the early 19th century and was extended in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble and features a rag slate roof with a gable end on the right and a hipped end on the left. There is a projecting stone rubble end stack on the right and a stone rubble shaft for an axial stack to the left of the center.
The original layout of the house is uncertain, but the main range on the right may have been a pair of one-room plan cottages with central entrances, each heated by end stacks. The left side was likely extended in the late 19th century with another one-room plan cottage that shares a chimney stack with the original left-hand cottage. The house is now arranged in a three-room plan.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. The earlier range on the right has a symmetrical two-window front with a pair of entrances in a lean-to porch at the center, although the right-hand entrance is now blocked. It is flanked by two PVC windows on the ground floor, with two original windows above. To the left, there is a 20th-century window on the ground floor and a 20th-century door to the right, with another 20th-century window above lighting the first floor.
The interior has not been inspected. There are several similar early 19th-century cottages in isolated locations on the moors in Bolventor. Much of the land was enclosed during this period by farmers leasing it from Squire Rodd of Trebartha on 99-year leases.
