Description

The Old Cottages are two cottages, likely originating as a single house, dating from the 17th century with 19th and 20th-century additions. The construction is of rendered stone and cob, covered by a thatched roof. The south-facing range is one room deep, with a stack at the east gable. The gable end has been extended to the rear in the 20th century, and an axial stack has been added. Further 20th-century additions are present on the rear and west end. The original layout may have included a hall at the upper end, a cross passage, and a kitchen at the lower end. The cottages are two storeys high with a five-window range. Two 19th-century enclosed porches, rendered and with sloping slate roofs, are positioned at the front. The inner doorways have roll mouldings. There are four irregularly-spaced ground floor casement windows, which have been renewed and fitted with glazing bars. Four upper-storey windows project above the eaves line, the second from the east being sheltered by a raking roof. The interiors have been altered. The east gable end has a large fireplace with a massive fireplace beam and a cloam oven. The ceiling features closely-spaced, thin curved beams. The roof structure is a collar rafter roof with face-pegged principals visible in the upstairs rooms.
