Description
Cleave is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries at the rear. It is constructed of slatestone rubble, partly rendered, and features slate roofs throughout. The main range has a roof of stone slates laid in diminishing courses, with chimneys at the gable ends. The 19th-century wing at the rear has a half-hipped roof. There is also an outshut with a catslide roof at the back of the main range, which has been partly heightened to accommodate a flat-roofed, two-storey addition from the 20th century.
The south front is two-storey with a three-window range and has three steps leading up to a central modern door. To the right of the door is a shallow buttress. On the ground floor, the left window is probably an early 19th-century 12-pane sash, while the right window is a renewed sash. The upper storey windows are renewed sashes that sit under raking roofs, which project slightly above the eaves line.
The interior has been significantly altered but features ceiling beams with scratch mouldings, a massive fireplace at the right gable end with a cambered fireplace beam, and a smaller granite fireplace at the left gable end. The principals are visible on the upper floor.
