Description

St Gennys House is a house that was formerly a vicarage. It likely has a core dating from the 17th century, with a range built around 1730, an early 19th-century range, an addition from 1913, and a late 20th-century addition. The building features some internal cob and slatestone rubble, with the 1730 range partly slate-hung. It is one room deep, with the early 19th-century range at the rear east forming an L-plan around the earlier core. The 1913 range is attached at the west gable end, creating a U-plan. The arms of the U are joined by the late 20th-century addition, forming a rectangular plan.

The south-facing range is two storeys high with three windows; the upper storey right window is blocked. The ground floor is stucco, with slate-hung above, and features a central open wooden porch with a pyramidal slate roof, likely from 1913. The left ground floor window is a renewed three-light window with glazing bars, while the right ground floor window and the upper floor windows are 12-pane sashes set in slate-hung reveals. The early 19th-century range has a symmetrical two-storey, three-window east elevation in rubble slatestone, with 12-pane sash windows in shallow reveals under brick arches. The central entrance under a brick arch is now blocked, and there is a hipped roof at the north end.

The 1913 range is rendered with a slate hipped roof and is taller than the other ranges by half a storey. The interior has been much altered but retains some cob walls and early 19th-century panelling. The vicarage was described as "new built" in 1734, and John Wesley stayed here on several occasions, as noted in R. Parnall's "Wreckers and Wrestlers: A History of St Gennys Parish" published in 1973.
