Description
The Thatch is a house with a core dating from the 17th century, featuring alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The rear is constructed of whitewashed cob, while the front is made of whitewashed rubble stone. It has a wheat reed thatched roof with gabled ends, a brick chimney on the left gable end, a brick stack at the junction between the buildings, and a front lateral stack with a brick shaft. The lower end of the house, which has a slightly lower Norfolk reed thatch roof, was rebuilt in the late 20th century, and its floor level is considerably lower than that of the higher end.
The entrance is located at the front, leading into a stair hall that may have once served as a through or cross passage. The house has a single depth plan, is two rooms wide, and includes a circa 19th century lean-to with a slate roof attached to the left end. It is two storeys high with a two-window front, featuring a 19th century timber studded front door under a canopy. On the ground floor, there is a large late 19th or early 20th century two-light casement window with three panes per light on the left, and a similar window on the first floor to the right of the lateral stack.
Inside, there is a fireplace in the lateral stack that is partly blocked. The interior also features two chamfered, stopped cross beams of heavy scantling along with moulded axial beams. The roof space was inaccessible during the survey in 1984.
