Description

Old Upton is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It has origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with remodelling in the late 18th century and alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior is whitewashed and roughcast, topped with a thatched roof, while the outshut has a slate roof. The building features a projecting rendered stack at the right gable end and another stack with a brick shaft at the gable end of the wing.

The structure has a complex layout in an L shape. The main range was originally single depth and has been extended by a wide outshut. A wing projects forward from the front on the left side, with a date of 1682 marked on the chimney breast in this wing. The wing has been further extended by a single-storey thatched addition with a hipped roof, which is currently used as a garage.

The house is two storeys tall, with the main range having two windows. The front door, which is from the 20th century, is located under a flat-roofed porch that features a modillion frieze. On the ground floor, the left window is a two-light casement from the 20th century, while the right window is a circular 18th-century hornless sash with 10 panes above 10 panes. The thatch is eyebrowed over two similar windows on the first floor. The right return of the wing has a similar sash window on the first floor and large four-light casements on the ground floor, both from the 20th century.

Inside, there are massive cross beams and moulded axial beams. The 20th-century fireplace in the wing features a plaster panel with an ornamental shell motif, which may have been re-used from a 17th-century chimneypiece. There is a variety of floor levels upstairs, but the roof space was inaccessible during the survey in 1984.
