Description
The threshing barn on the north side of the yard at Trebartha Barton is a Grade II* listed building, dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed from stone rubble with granite dressings and features a partly slate-hung front. The roof is made of rag slate and has gable ends. The barn has a rectangular plan with three shallow porches, or midstryes, that project from the front, creating an overall 'E' shaped layout. There are two-storey lean-to outshuts infilling the space between the porches, which are open-fronted on the ground floor. The ground rises towards the rear, allowing direct access to the threshing floor, and 20th-century sheds have been built adjoining the rear. Originally, the barn's machinery was powered by a water wheel, which has since been removed.
The exterior features two storeys and presents an impressive symmetrical elevation facing the yard. The gabled porches are located in the center and on either side, with dressed granite quoins and voussoirs. The ground floor has wide openings and threshing doors above, which are fitted with 19th-century plank doors flanked by narrow ventilation slits. Small roundels are present in the gables. The slate-hung lean-to outshuts between the porches are open-fronted on the ground floor, providing shelters with mangers for cattle. The open fronts of these shelters have segmental arches above the ground floor, with three windows on the first floor. The rear elevation of the original sheds remains virtually unaltered, featuring wide opposing threshing doors. The interior has not been inspected.
