Description

This is a planned terrace of nine houses located at Cambridge Place. The terrace was built in 1880. The construction is stucco over masonry, with asbestos slate roofs, deep stuccoed stacks topped with moulded cornices and modillions, and many old clay pots. The houses are arranged in a double-depth plan, each being double-fronted with a central doorway. The terrace is composed of a pattern of four houses, one house, and then four houses again. Each house has a three-bay front.

Triangular pediments are above the central doorways, and segmental pediments adorn the windows above, supported by consoles. Moulded parapet cornices top the terrace, and flanking canted bays feature arched strings to the ground floor, with triangular pediments above them, except for the central house, which is surmounted by a large triangular pediment containing an oculus and lacks the canted bays. End pilasters are rusticated to the ground floor and panelled above. The original windows are horned sashes, and the front doors are of a three-panel design with top glazing and overlights.

The central house features a wide, distyle Doric porch with a triglyph frieze, which extends over flanking paired, pilastered sashes. Balustrades are present on the tripartite sashes above, with pilasters and hoods featuring a moulded entablature. The interior has not been inspected but is reportedly largely unaltered, with good plasterwork and joinery details. The return sides of the end houses each feature two windows, paired stacks to shaped gables, segmental pediments, and carved consoles to the first-floor windows. This is a richly detailed example of a late 19th-century stuccoed terrace.
