Description

The farm buildings located to the southwest of Hurdon Farmhouse date from the mid-19th century and include stables with a hayloft, a cider house, calf houses, a fodder house, a shelter shed (later used as a shearing shed), a loose box, and an implement shed. The buildings are constructed from slatestone rubble walls, with some cob on part of the rear wall of the fodder house, and feature timber lintels or shallow brick arches, topped with rag slate roofs.

The overall layout is F-shaped, with the two-storey stables and loft forming the top of the F. Behind the stables are lean-to calf houses that connect to the fodder house, which is the oldest part of the complex. The shelter shed and horse box are positioned at right angles to the fodder house, while an open-fronted implement shed completes the leg of the F.

The stables consist of a three-window range, featuring a stable door flanked by partly shuttered and partly glazed windows, and a doorway leading to the cider house, which has a two-light shuttered window beside it. The left side of the stable has a slightly detached flight of stone steps leading up to a central loading doorway. The calf house has two doorways towards the center and slit ventilators on both sides. The fodder house includes a doorway on its right and a partly blocked, widely splayed window on its left, which contains masonry from the 17th century with a chamfered granite edge. The open-fronted shelter shed faces west and is supported by two granite monoliths, with a small rear window and a loose box on its left, which has a doorway on the east wall and a slit ventilator in the splayed corner. The implement shed features a mostly open front supported by one granite monolith and two wooden posts.

Inside, where inspected, the buildings retain their original floor and roof structures, and the cider house contains a complete cider press. This group of farm buildings at Hurdon Farm is considered a significant ensemble.
