Description
The barns located approximately 25 metres north-east of Penrose Farmhouse are three adjoining structures dating from the 17th century, which were remodeled and extended in the 19th century. They are constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and feature mostly grouted scantle slate roofs, although some areas have been replaced with corrugated asbestos and dry slate. The barns have an L-shaped plan, with the original 17th-century range facing south-east at the front, and two additional barns built at right angles behind the right-hand side during the early 19th century. The left-hand walls of the 19th-century barns are built against the bank.
The buildings are two storeys high and their elevations have remained largely unchanged since the 19th century, aside from some enlarged openings from the 20th century. The south-east front of the original range includes two complete 17th-century chamfered window openings on the ground floor (middle and left) and a chamfered jamb on the left side of a widened doorway towards the right. There is also another 17th-century doorway in the left-hand gable end. The 19th-century structure features a loading doorway on the first floor to the left of the middle, another loading doorway at the left-hand end accessed by a flight of stone steps, and an additional doorway at the rear. The 19th-century barns have slightly irregular north-east fronts, each with two small ground floor doorways, larger first floor loading or winnowing doorways (with corresponding openings in the rear wall), and very small window openings. Many of these openings contain old ledged doors and some have small-paned windows. A lean-to on the right side of the 19th-century barns includes a reused 18th-century round-headed door, which may have originally come from the farmhouse. The interior has not been inspected.
