Description
The Carbis Brick and Tile Works features a row of three beehive kilns and a chimney, dating from the late 19th century. Constructed from granite rubble and brick, the kilns are arranged in a north/south orientation, with a square chimney located to the south of the northernmost kiln. Each circular kiln measures about 7 metres in diameter and is built from granite rubble, topped with coping along the vertical walls and domed brick roofs.
Each kiln has a segmental-headed brick doorway at both the front and rear, and the interiors are fully faced in brick. Inside, there is a central circular brick structure for the flue above the furnace, which is located below the kiln, and each kiln features a ventilation hole at the top of the domed roof. The chimney is set on a square battered granite plinth and constructed from white brick, with cast iron bracing at the corners. The base of the chimney measures approximately 3 metres by 3 metres and is slightly tapered. Beehive kilns are a rare survival in Cornwall.
