Description

Kennal Vale House and Adjoining Garden Walls

House, possibly a former account house for the Kennal Vale Gunpowder Works, dating to circa the early 19th century and constructed in at least three phases.

The building is constructed largely of granite rubble with granite dressings, with some coursed dressed granite. Shallow brick arches span the openings. The roofs are concrete tile hipped roofs, and rendered brick axial chimneys project towards the rear.

The plan is deep and built in several phases. At the entrance front there are two rooms with an entrance hall leading to a stair hall between them; the right-hand room is wider. The rear of the house features dressed granite walls of almost ashlar quality and is probably the original structure, with later extensions added to the front. The interior was not inspected, so the arrangement of other rooms is uncertain.

The building stands two storeys tall with largely unaltered regular elevations featuring original hornless sashes with glazing bars in the original openings. The nearly symmetrical east front has three windows with a doorway and window over positioned slightly left of centre. A 19th-century six-panel door with overlight sits beneath a 20th-century doorcase with triangular pediment. The side walls show evidence of 19th-century extension. The left-hand garden front has four windows with a 20th-century bow window positioned right of centre. The right-hand garden front has four windows and includes 20th-century openings at the far left with horned sashes. The rear wall retains original sashes, including a round-headed stair sash.

Adjoining the rear of the house is a high rubble screen wall with brick battlements.
