Description
This listing describes a chest tomb and two headstones located approximately 10 metres north of the east end of the Church of Saint Sithney. The chest tomb is likely from the 18th century, while one headstone dates from 1812 and the other from 1827. The chest tomb is made of dressed granite and features a later dressed granite lid that obscures the original lid, along with incised slate monolith headstones. The tomb is rectangular in shape with plain sides and a moulded lid.
At the west end, the headstone has a segmental-arched top, while the east headstone features a round-arched top with moulded corners. The inscription on the chest tomb is hidden by the later lid. The west headstone commemorates John, son of Catherine Richards, who was wounded in a mine accident and died on July 10, 1912, at the age of 22. The east headstone is dedicated to Joseph Gundery, who died in 1827 at the age of 57, and includes the epitaph: "Beneath this stone lies silent in the dust A husband dear that in the Lord did trust, Till the last trump shall sound and bid him rise, To meet his Blessed Jesus in the skies."
