Description
The Church of St Moren Belfry is a small bell tower that may date from the 16th or 17th century, although it could also be late Medieval. It is constructed of small slatestone rubble and features a scantle slate roof with gable ends, following a rectangular plan. The tower has two storeys. The south front includes a central nearly semi-circular doorway with slate voussoirs, and there is a small square window above it in the repaired walling. A similar-sized window on the first floor at the rear is an original 2-light oak mullion. Access to the first floor and the bellframe is provided by a stone and earth ramp from the churchyard leading to a narrow doorway in the west gable, which has an original oak frame. There is a small original oak window to the left of this doorway and another in the opposite east wall. The ground floor east and west walls have small corbelled arched openings towards the rear. Inside, the tower retains original floor beams and a surviving contemporary oak bellframe with curved braces, housing one bell that remains in situ. The tower formerly held three bells; one was stolen, and the third is located in Tresillian church.
