Description
The Dunstanville Memorial is a monument dedicated to Lord Dunstanville and Basset of Tehidy, dated 1836 on its base. It is constructed from dressed granite in large blocks and features a massive tapering octagonal cross. The plinth measures approximately 12 metres square and stands 3 metres high, with a round-headed doorway on the south side. The base consists of two square courses leading to a short octagonal broached pedestal topped with weathered coping. The south side of the pedestal is inscribed with the words: "THE COUNTY OF CORNWALL IN MEMORY OF LORD DUNSTANVILLE AND BASSET AD 1836." Each cardinal side of the shaft has a small square opening at the top, and the concave-sided cross is pierced from front to back by a diamond-shaped opening. Located near Carn Brea Castle to the east, the memorial serves as a prominent landmark and may have also been designed to function as a navigational beacon for shipping off the north coast.
