Description

CARN BREA CARNKIE SW 64 SE 5/139 Calciner at west end of buddle floor of West Basset Stamps on North Wheal Basset sett at SW 687 401

GV II Double Brunton calciner at tin ore dressing plant of former West Basset Mine; now derelict. 1898, altered. Coursed square granite and small rubble; now roofless. Rectangular plan on north-south axis, with 2 chambers for 16-foot rotating inclined tables. Single storey; 2 segmental-headed openings in each side wall, round-headed openings at ground level of the end walls, with remains of connecting flue to chimney at north end. History: used to burn off impurities from tin-ore concentrate. Functionally and visually an integral element of a group which is probably now unique in Cornwall.
