Description

Vanner House is a former tin mine building, now derelict, dating from around 1908 and altered in the 1930s. It is constructed from a mix of granite and kilias rubble, featuring granite quoins and brick arches over the openings, although the roof is missing. The building is long and rectangular, measuring approximately 48 by 12 metres, and is oriented on an east-west axis, parallel to the former stamps located on the south side. It is a single-storey structure with a 13-bay north wall that has large round-headed window openings, with doorways located in the centre and at the left end. The end walls have been altered to create twin gables for a two-span roof in the 1930s; the east end has one round-headed window in each gable, while the other end is altered and damaged. The north side features similar windows and a large rectangular opening in the centre, opposite the engine house. Inside, there are concrete foundations for separators, classifiers, and other equipment. This building was constructed as a late addition to the tin-mining operations at Wheal Basset, intended to house Frue Vanners for dressing ore. It is now considered a relatively rare type of building and is a central element of a group that is prominently located on the northern slope of Carnmenellis.
