Description
This is a terrace of three similar houses located on Quay Road in Charlestown, St Austell. Built in the early 19th century, they are shown on a tithe map dating to 1843. Number 33, the rightmost house, is constructed of painted brick, while the other two are faced with incised stucco. The roofs are covered with Delabole slate and feature lions’ head masks on the cast-iron guttering, with brick end stacks. The buildings likely have a double-depth plan, with rear extensions.
The exterior is two storeys, with an overall 8-window frontage. Number 35 has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows, Number 34 has a slightly asymmetrical arrangement of three windows, and Number 33 has a two-window front. All the houses have late 19th or 20th-century 4-pane horned sash windows. They also have 19th-century panelled doors, with later glazing added to the top panels, except for Number 33 which has a 20th-century door. The interiors have not been inspected.
The terrace is a complete and unusual example of an 1820s artisan terrace, representing a little altered group within this former fishing and china clay port.
