Description

This is a former copper-ore storage floor dating to the mid-18th century, with boundary and dividing walls likely constructed in the mid-19th century. The ore floor occupies an extensive area of approximately 2,000 square metres on the east side of Charlestown Road, near the harbour. It is situated between Duck Street to the south, a bend in Quay Road to the east, and the Rashleigh Arms and adjoining buildings to the north. Access is primarily from the west, with pedestrian entry also available from Quay Road to the south.

The floor itself is paved with a variety of rough cobble stones set in a mixture of earth, gravel, and in some areas, concrete. It is enclosed by rubble-stone walls, standing approximately 1.5 metres high, with some sections featuring modern concrete coping. Recesses with worked granite surrounds, originally containing water taps, are located on the outer faces of the east and west walls. A granite dividing wall runs approximately two-thirds of the way in from the western entrance, and includes a wide central opening.
