Description

Antron Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of dressed granite and killas, with the front brought to course, while the rest is painted rubble featuring dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, along with slate sills. The building has an L-shaped plan with a grouted scantle slate roof that has a gable end at the rear arm of the L. There are brick chimneys on the side walls, an external two-stage rubble stack at the rear gable end, and another on the rear wall to the right. The farmhouse features cast-iron ogee gutters.

The layout includes three rooms deep on the left side, with a back kitchen wing at right angles to the rear. The front has two rooms: a wider parlour or living room on the left and another parlour on the right, with a cross passage leading to a central rear stair hall. There are shallower rooms on either side of the stair, and a passage behind the left-hand room that includes a single-storey porch, likely with a pantry, projecting from the left side of the back door. A later 19th-century lean-to is on the right side of the house, and there is a 20th-century conservatory at the front.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window south front, which is slightly wider to the left of the doorway. The original four-panel door has flush-beaded bottom panels and a rectangular overlight, with 12-pane hornless sash windows. Similar original sashes are found on the three-window left-hand (west) side wall. A hipped-ended porch is situated between the left-hand window and the left-of-middle window.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it may be as unaltered as the exterior, which remains very complete and original. An older house once stood on this site but was destroyed by fire in the 19th century. The gate piers nearby likely belonged to the older house.
