Description
No. 86 Southgate Street is a cottage, formerly part of a pair, likely built in the late 18th century and slightly altered. The exterior is made of uncoursed killas rubble, which is cement washed and painted white, topped with a slate roof that features a granite chimney and a brick chimney. The building has a rectangular single-depth two-unit plan with a small rear outshut. It stands two low storeys tall and has two bays, presenting a symmetrical facade. The central doorway has a recessed board door, and there are two small square windows on each floor, all fitted with 6-pane sashes in exposed boxes. The left corner of the facade is supported by a large full-height buttress, while the right corner shows ragged masonry due to the demolition of the adjacent No. 88. A large square corniced chimney made of granite blocks is located at the left gable, and a small brick chimney is at the right-hand gable. The rear of the building is mostly blind, except for the small outshut. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
