Description
The clock tower with stable yard and office yard, located northeast of Tregothnan, is a significant structure built between 1816 and 1818 by William Wilkins for the Fourth Viscount Falmouth. The office yard was added later, between 1845 and 1848, by Lewis Vulliamy for the second Earl of Falmouth. The building features yellow brick with stone dressings on the main east front, while other parts are constructed from rubble with stone dressings and slate roofs.
Designed in a Tudor Collegiate style, the east front consists of two storeys and includes a central gate tower with an arch flanked by octagonal turrets. The first floor has two 2-light mullioned and transomed windows on either side of a clock, with battlements and Tudor terracotta chimneys above. There are two bays on either side of the tower, featuring six-light mullioned and transomed windows below and five-light above. The building is topped with a battlemented parapet and tall Tudor terracotta stacks.
The internal faces of the stable yard are made of rubble and show some later alterations. The northeast side has five carriage doors with four-centred heads, and the yard is paved with granite setts. The office yard, which is the original stable yard, is smaller and simpler, particularly in its exterior walls, and it adjoins the stable yard to the south. The development of these buildings remains uncertain.
