Description
This is a granite milestone located at the entrance to the depot of Mounts Bay Coaches. The milestone stands 0.84 meters high and is painted white. It features a pyramidal head and a rectangular base, with a triangular shaft rising from large pyramidal stops. Two rectangular sides of the shaft face the road at an angle and are inscribed with sans serif capital letters and Arabic numerals. The east face reads "PENZANCE / 1 MILE / LANDS END / 11," while the west face shows "HAYLE / 7 MILES / CAMBORNE / 13 / REDRUTH / 16 / TRURO / 25," with the lettering highlighted in black paint. An Ordnance Survey benchmark is carved on the top of the stone. Historical records indicate that the milestone was first documented on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map, where it was only marked with the distances to Penzance and Lands End, suggesting that the west face was likely inscribed in the late 19th century.
