Description

The former butter market, built in 1853, is located on Fore Street in West Looe. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with some granite dressings and features a dry slate polygonal roof with deep projecting eaves. The roof is topped with a central bellcote that has segmental-arched openings above moulded imposts and a modillion cornice. The building has a small hexagonal plan and is a single storey. The west front includes a central elliptically-arched opening with impost blocks, a dropped keyblock, and a datestone above. The other elevations, which were originally open, now have plate-glass shop windows, with a doorway on the north-east side. Inside, the ceiling features radiating tie beams of trusses.
