Description
The barn, probably dating to the late 15th century with additions likely from the 16th and 17th centuries and later alterations including 20th-century restoration, is located about 25 metres south-east of Cotehele House. It is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble with granite dressings and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. The plan includes two distinct builds; the original three bays are set to the left, with the rear at a lower ground level, and attached to the right is a later addition with a central doorway to both the front and rear. A single-storey addition is at the right end.
The front of the first barn has three bays divided by weathered ashlar buttresses; a central 4-light granite window, probably a later insertion, is positioned centrally. To the right and left are 4-centred arched granite doorways with moulded surrounds, the one to the right having a dripstone. A ventilation slit is located at the upper level to the left. The range to the right has a wide 4-centred arched granite doorway, chamfered and stopped, with ventilation slits to the right and left. Large granite quoins are visible. The left gable end features a weathered diagonal buttress to the left. The ground floor has a 2-light chamfered granite window, with a ventilation slit above. Attached to the rear left is a short screen wall and a small single-storey addition with a gable end, featuring two doors and a 20th-century window on its inner side. Attached to the right gable end is a small single-storey addition with two 20th-century doors to the front and a lean-to at the rear.
The rear of the original barn retains granite quoins marking the junction with the later building, and has one weathered buttress to the right. It features central double doors and an external stair leading to double doors providing access to the loft, with a continuous pitched hood covering a 2-light casement to the left. At the upper level, there are also two 2-light casements to the right of the loft door. The ground floor has 20th-century casements to the right and left, set in earlier openings with timber lintels remaining. To the left is a 4-centred arched granite doorway, chamfered, with a shuttered window opening above. The section to the right has been altered to three bays, with a central ground-floor door and 2-light casements to the right and left, all with stone segmental heads; at the first floor are three 2-light windows with shutters. The later building to the left has a tall central 4-centred arched granite doorway (replaced in the 20th century), with 20th-century windows to the right and left, and a door to the end left. The upper level features ventilation slits to the right and left and a 3-light window with shutters at the first floor to the left. The interior of the barn has not been inspected.
