Description

The First and Last House is a former cottage that has been converted into a cafe. It dates from the early 19th century and was extended in the early 20th century in two phases, with further alterations in the later 20th century. The building is constructed of painted granite rubble, with most of the extensions rendered. It features a grouted scantle slate roof that slopes lower at the rear of the front range, and has brick chimneys located over the gable ends and the cross wall to the left of the middle. The gutters are made of cast-iron in an ogee section.

The overall plan of the building is T-shaped. The original cottage, which had two rooms, is located on the left and includes an integral outshut that may have contained shallow service rooms. In the early 20th century, the building was extended in a similar style on the right, more than doubling its original size. A few years later, a wing was added at right angles behind the middle section. There is also a later 19th-century addition that fills the rear right-hand angle.

The exterior is single-storey with a three-window front. The original two-window front cottage is on the left, featuring a large window on its left, a small window on the right, and an original doorway in between, although the door and windows have been replaced in the 20th century.

The interior has been remodelled for use as a cafe since the early 20th century, and no original fittings are visible, although it likely retains its original roof structure. Despite its growing popularity as a tourist attraction since the late 19th century, the building has maintained its simple character and remains an important feature of the rugged landscape.
