Description

The railway footbridge at Redruth station was built in 1888 for the Great Western Railway Company. It is constructed from cast and wrought iron, steel, and wood, featuring a U-plan design with quarter-turned flights of steps on the west side, which run parallel to the railway line. The bridge is supported by square cast-iron columns at each end, adorned with capitals in an Egyptian style. The landings on top of these columns are accessed by open wooden steps with steel strings, complemented by cast-iron open-work balusters and wooden handrails. The triangular spandrels of the main deck were originally decorated with wrought-iron monograms of '1888' and 'GWR', but only the east side at the north end retains these decorations. The landings and main deck are enclosed by wrought-iron lattice fences. The steps at the south end connect to the porch of the waiting room.

Historically, Redruth station opened on 25 August 1852 as part of the West Cornwall Railway. The original station building was timber, accompanied by a large goods shed. A footbridge was added by the Great Western Railway in 1888, likely coinciding with the replacement of the downside shelter and improvements related to the line's dualling. In the 1930s, the original main station building was replaced with a standard GWR structure. The footbridge remains an unaltered example of its type and date.
