Description
St John's Road Footbridge is a railway footbridge built around 1860 for the Great Northern Railway Company. It is constructed from wrought iron and timber. The bridge features two square corner towers, one at each end, which consist of two round-headed arches each supported by four corner girders connected by lattice work cross pieces. These supports have curved and splayed bases. There are additional round-headed supporting arches of a similar design that carry the bridge decking.
Single long flights of steps lead up to the main corner towers, which have iron lattice balustrades and newel posts made from four corner girders with curved and splayed bases. A curved and stepped section connects the corner towers to the main bridge span, which has a continuous lattice balustrade and arched external supports. The deck of the bridge changes direction at the center.
This footbridge is a very rare and large-scale example of railway footbridge design featuring an unusual wrought-iron construction.
