Description

This small building, likely dating back to around 1230, is primarily brick and stone with an almost entirely 19th-century exterior appearance, notable for its rounded shape. It has a hipped slate roof. The interior consists of a single vaulted room on the ground floor, featuring eight concentric arches supported by chamfered wood beams with run-out stops. A spiral stone staircase is built into the wall, leading to an upper room of similar proportions but without vaulting. The windows in both rooms are of 19th-century date. The building formerly served as a house for a blacksmith. It was originally part of the Priory and is believed to have been used as a lock-up for the monks. The building is informally known as the 'Prior's Oven,' a name referring to its shape and not its former function. It forms a group with numbers 15 to 17 Hall Place, which are buildings of local interest.
