Description

Barclays Bank, located at 12 Market Place, was built in 1862 by William Eaves. The building is an elaborate three-story structure constructed of ashlar. It features a carved parapet with piers supporting lozenge panels and ball finials. There are four windows on the top floor, set within surrounds and separated by panels with brackets supporting a cornice. The building has a cornice between each of its three stories. The first floor contains four windows with segmental pediments featuring carved foliated ornament on brackets, with roundels in the panels between the bays. The ground floor has four longer, round-headed windows with small glazing bars and carved spandrels; two round-arched doorways are present, each with a fanlight, hood, and brackets. Keystones are dated 1862. The doorways have double doors and carved pilasters with foliated capitals, as well as a panelled plinth. The bank forms a group with numbers 11 and 14 on Market Place.
