Description
The former Wheal Peevor purser's office, built in 1883 and now used for commercial purposes, may have been designed by James Hicks.
Constructed from coursed killas rubble with granite ashlar dressings, the building has a rectangular plan that extends to the west into the Buttermarket courtyard.
The exterior showcases a stripped Renaissance style, featuring one storey at the front (east) and a lower ground floor to the west. It sits on a coursed killas granite plinth and has a monopitch tiled roof behind a parapet. The main elevation is symmetrical and consists of three bays. In the center, there is a round-headed entrance with a fluted keystone, accessed by granite steps. Above the entrance, a parapet spans all three bays, with a panelled entablature and a central roundel above the middle bay, topped by a pediment adorned with scrolled and fluted decoration and a granite finial. The outer bays feature corner pilasters and large windows with chamfered mullions and transoms, all set in round architraves with fluted keystones. The window surrounds are embellished with floriate carving, while the outer bays of the parapet are made of coursed killas granite, with all other features crafted from granite ashlar.
Inside, the office has stairs descending on its north side, and some historic joinery remains, including doors and cupboards.
