Description
The former offices of the Malayan Tin Dredging Company is a late 19th-century office building located at No 2 Station Road in Redruth. It is constructed from granite ashlar and some killas rubble, topped with a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and displays an eclectic architectural style. It is a single-storey structure with three symmetrical bays. The corners and the narrower central bay feature banded pilasters. The central bay contains a large round-headed doorway with columnar jambs, a moulded head with a keystone, and a fanlight with altered glazing. The outer bays have large coupled segmental-headed sash windows with chamfered surrounds; the upper panes consist of four panes, while the lower panes lack glazing bars. The building also has a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a parapet that is interrupted in the centre by a tall Jacobean-style shaped gablet. This gablet contains stepped triple coved niches with keystones and is flanked by pedestals with small urns. The roof is covered with very small slates and features coped gables and gable chimneys.
The interior is believed to have been altered but may still retain some historic joinery. This building was constructed in the late 19th century as the office for the Malayan Tin Dredging Company, which traded in stocks and shares, likely under the direction of James Wickett (1841-1921). It has been suggested that the building was designed by the Redruth architect James Hicks (1846-1896).
