Description

The waiting room on the down platform of Redruth Railway Station was built in 1888 for the Great Western Railway Company. It features a timber frame and cladding, supported by cast-iron brackets for the canopy. The structure has a shallow rectangular plan with seven bays, and the monopitched roof extends over the platform as a deep canopy, except for the seventh bay, which may have been added later. The roof is supported by pairs of stop-chamfered posts and has cast-iron brackets on the cantilever beams. The first bay is open, creating a porch that leads to the entrance gateway and footbridge. The other bays have lapped weatherboard walls, with double doors in the fourth bay, single doors in the fifth and sixth bays, and four-pane sashed windows in the second, third, and sixth bays. The canopy features a deep fretted valance and a moulded cornice. The right-hand end includes a seventh bay made of matching materials, which has two small high-set windows in the front and a doorway in the end wall, likely serving as an office store or cloakroom. The rear of the building has four-pane sashed windows in the fourth and fifth bays.

Redruth station opened on 25 August 1852 as part of the West Cornwall Railway. Initially, the down platform had a simple open shelter, while the main station building on the up platform was timber construction with a large goods shed nearby. In 1888, the Great Western Railway added a footbridge and replaced the open shelter on the down platform with this new wooden waiting room and canopy as part of improvements related to the dualling of the line.
